Now that I'm a junior in high school, I realize how different my life in high school has changed since I was a freshmen. For the first time ever, I have a lead role in the upcoming spring musical. This has been especially exciting, because I've never been in the spotlight before, and have always loved the theater arts, but when I was a freshmen if somebody had asked me what I thought my junior year would be like, I would have never imagined it to be the way it actually is. I would have imagined that I’d be on the varsity volleyball team, a part of the Avid crew, popular, of course, and all of those other aspects of the ideal high school status. Now that I am a junior, I see that I was incredibly wrong about my expectations, because I was naïve, and I had different interests, different goals at the time. Yet it’s okay that I’ve accomplished none of the goals I had in mind as a freshmen. If I were to be given the opportunity to somehow achieve all of the “goals” now, I wouldn’t want to be on the varsity volleyball team, or part of the Avid crew, or even popular. To clarify, it’s not that I think it would be a negative thing to be a part of those groups, it’s that I don’t belong in those groups; that’s simply not who I am. All of the events, situations, and problems that I’ve had to deal with, in and out of the school campus, throughout my time at this school, have really changed my perspective on life. As cliché as that sounds, it’s true. All of the things that I used to think were important, now aren’t.
Some of the highlights of this year, so far, include: getting the lead character for the school play, becoming more involved in my school’s clubs and activities, and attending and supporting my school’s events. I found that by getting more involved the clubs and sports, I had more time to do things for myself rather than always working, and I realized that I need to make time to relax, otherwise, I won’t work as well because I’ll be stressed and tired. Also, by being involved in several extracurricular activities, I found new methods to balance my time, in order to set enough time apart to get my homework done, and still manage to get a healthy amount of sleep in. The bonus for sports was that I got physically healthier, it looks good on my resume, and of course, it’s fun. My junior year, so far, has given me many great opportunities to work on my personal self-growth.
As of right now, I’m really trying to focus on my school work over anything else. However, I’m also trying to organize my time in a way that I can balance my time to fit in work and play. So far this year, I’ve been playing for the tennis team, helping out my class fund raise, practicing for the spring musical, and going to a youth group every Friday. Clearly, I’ve been busy, but I’m managing my time accordingly with my school work.
